I’m always a little frightened when Kevin steps up to the microphone.  Always afraid it’s going to be painful. . . not so much because he doesn’t sing well, but because he’s just not at all what we’ve come to expect from performers on American Idol.  He chose to sing Brian McKnight’s “One Last Cry” to try to show a strong and powerful side of himself. He started off a little flat and looking a little scared. . . like I said, I was a little scared for him, too.  Ultimately, I don’t think it was the right song for him.  And, I was a bit sad for him because I think he knew he didn’t do that great. But he gave an incredibly sincere performance. Randy started of by saying that everybody really liked him because he is “honestly talented” and such an honest good kid.  Randy went a little easy on him, probably trying to boost his confidence and told him “it was the bomb.”  I believe that was the first time Randy has said that since the auditions.  Randy just won some idolfan points with that. Paula was squishy for him again and built him up but didn’t comment on his singing. Enter Simon. . . the hatchet man.  He started off with “I like you, but. . . that would appeal to anyone over the age of 90 who is hard of hearing.”  Vocally on the verge of excruciating.  Paula stuck up for him. Simon may be a prick and doesn’t sugar-coat, but he was basically right.  That didn’t stop the girls from pinching his cheeks though.
