chose to sing an outrageous gospel song called “Wanna Praise You” on tonight’s American Idol. First, let me say that while I love gospel music, I am not big on the whole jesus-freak thing and can’t stand it when American Idol panders to this segment of the economy, as has been the case with so many Clay Aiken and Carrie Underwood songs. That said, I’ll take black gospel over white bible-thump any day of the week. came bounding down the ramp shouting out . . . “This song goes out to everybody that wants to be free. You’re addiction, lifestyle and situation may be big, but god is bigger.” It was a little flat after that until she pulled out the Mandiva moves and then it fucking rocked. You could tell she was really feeling the song, but it was a little screamy in places . . even for a screaming black diva. I think she will win some of the jesus freak vote with that one, even though they don’t tend to like black jesus freakdom. . Randy said there was no doubt that she can sing but that he didn’t get the song choice. Paula said that there are now 40 million people who have joined the Church of but that she wanted to show some vulnerability next week. Simon called it self-indulgent and said he didn’t get it. I’m not surprised by Simon’s comments. I’m sure the first political/religious line bothered him. . . just a little too edgey. Anyway, at least it was original and she put her all into it. You’ll notice that no one complained about Carrie Underwood’s performance of her Jesus-freak song a few weeks earlier. . Here’s a clip of ’s “Wanna Praise You” – unfortunately, the sound quality is bad:
