Bucky Covington chose to sing “Oh Boy” by Buddy Holly in last week’s American Idol. Barry Manilow was pretty confident that Bucky could pull it off, but I wasn’t so sure. I have to give him credit because following Mandisa would have been tough for anyone. That said, Bucky continues to look like an amateur as the other contestants develop really quickly into serious professionals. I liked Bucky’s raspy voice in places and am glad that his Farah Fawcett hair is gone, but overall, it wasn’t super strong. I think he’s just too young and inexperienced. Maybe in 5 years or so. . Randy was lukewarm for the most part but thought it was a good song choice and he worked the microphone and the hair well enough. Paula thought it was a great song choice. Simon had to give a “reality check.” He thought it was a pointless karaoke performance and that a first time viewer would say “So What?”
