chose to sing “In The Still Of The Night” on American Idol’s Fifties Theme night. I keep waiting for Ace to do something extraordinary. I was hoping that tonight would be the night, but, as each week passes, I get scared that when he does, it will be extraordinarily bad rather than good. 7 year old Sammy wasn’t worried though. Before we get to the singing, let’s just say that Ace was looking pretty hot again. That said up front, the performance started out a little rocky, as usual for Ace. He did the weird mouth thing at the beginning, which is always a little disturbing. Even still, he pulled the song off pretty well with the best parts being when he really stepped out of his comfort zone and added some original Ace-ness. Ace should take this to heart. He needs more confidence and he also needs to recognize that he is best when he breaks out of the pack and shows a bit more of himself. He’s trying to play a certain “sweet boy band” schtick, but he should really be a little more edgey. So listen up Ace – cut the neutered, pre-pubescent boy band thing and show us some sexy edge! We know you have it in vast quantities. As Fantasia would say. . . don’t be afraid to “get ugly.” In Ace’s case, this should be “dirty.” Randy said that he took a classic song and brought something different and fresh to it. Paula said she counted 34 “will you marry me” signs for Ace. She thought it was his sexiest and sultriest performance all season, though that is not saying much. Simon said that it wasn’t the best vocal of the evening but that it didn’t matter because it was one of his strongest yet. Ace was looking pretty happy with himself as he glanced to his “girlfriend.”
