Ace Young chose to sing “That’s All” on American Idol this week. It looked like the producers were trying to pump Ace up a little bit judging by the little interview segment before the performance. Ace said that he was looking to Rod for approval (perhaps more?) and that with Rod saying that his performance was fantastic and absolutely brilliant, that Rod gave him a stamp of approval. . . Let’s just say that Ace Looked very fetching in his suit but he should not have let them put his hair in a bun!!!!! It would have looked fine just slicked back. As far as the song goes, he started off really well, until he got to the first “That’s All.” After that, it got a little pitchy and whiny here and there. He tried to throw in the falsetto but he ranged into it, making it sound pitchy, rather than just doing it cut and dry. The performance was just ok. Randy tried to be nice. . He said he like the start of it, though it was pitchy in the bridge but that he worked it out in the end. He said that he wanted to see him sing a whole song in falsetto because that is where his money is. Paula agreed and said he did great. Simon said it wasn’t bad. . it was a little nasaley in the middle but that it was a charming performance, essentially damning him with feint praise. I think Simon knew that he was going home so he gave Ace a break. Ace was beaming after getting the approval from Simon, but he missed the deeper message.

Don’t get me wrong. . I LOVE ACE TOO! But, as I’ve said all along, he just wasn’t confident enough in himself to step out and put ALL of himself into the performance. This is the difference between Ace and Taylor. Taylor is totally unabashed – putting everything out there. Ace doesn’t do this. . he holds back just a little because he’s not as sure of his ability or something and this hurts on a show like American Idol. . .
