Elliott Yamin chose to sing “It Had To Be You” on American Idol this week. First of all, he looked the best he’s ever looked on the show, in my opinion. I wish he would have dumped the jeans, but I guess that would have been too dressy for the homeboy. He was definitely in his element with the song choice and the musical style, but after 3 blow-out performances prior to his, I can’t say that I was very overwhelmed by it. It was very well executed but didn’t quite go as far as the others. You could tell he was trying to ham it up a little, with big smiles and some smooth gestures, but it just didn’t reach out and grab like the other performances. Still, it was pretty flawless and enjoyable but just not as exciting. Randy thought it was very nice, relaxed and controlled. Paula appreciated him contemporizing the genre, comparing him to Harry Connick, Jr. and said that in 5 years of American Idol, she’s never seen so many at this stage who are capable of winning it. Simon said that it was a good vocal but that tonight personality will matter, obviously in reference to the personal touches the others added, and that he found it lacking in this area. Simon is almost always right.
