Katharine McPhee chose to sing “Someone To Watch Over Me” on American Idol this week. Rod Stewart said that she was born to sing the standards and that she’s fantastic. Let’s see what Idolfan thinks. . . She took it down a bit with the performance, wearing a very subtle black outfit and sitting on the stage steps as she started. It was a nice move and she got some great close up face time on this sensitive part of the song, not to mention that she was basically singing 3 feet away from the judges. She sounded fantastic. Her voice powerful and clear. . It actually reminded me, separately, of Judy Garland and Christina Aguilera in parts. . I know that sounds really weird. That said, it was a great vocal but the song was so slow and sensitive that it didn’t reach out, grab you and hit you over the head, like some of the other performance and like we’ve come to expect from American Idol. Don’t get me wrong though, it was extremely powerful if you paid attention, but if you were just casually observing. . you might have missed the sheer radiance. This is the most important part, so pay attention: Katharine McPhee has now unequivocally knocked Kellie Pickler out of the front running for female vocalist on American Idol. She is sweet, beautiful, classy and a much better singer. . .Her personality is more subtle than Kellie’s so it has taken longer for people to come to know, appreciate, and love her. . but with tonight’s performance. . she has stepped WAY OUT in front for the girls. Randy said it was her element and that she sailed through and that he loved the performance. . . “it was excellent.” Paula said that she felt like she was watching and falling in love with the essence of who Katharine is, saying that it was the perfect song for her, reminding her of Mr. Holland’s Opus. Simon said that Katharine made the others look like “good amateurs” and that it was in a completely and utterly different league and that she looked like a returning pro and that it was SO much better than the others.” . . Paula handed some cred to Rod Stewart for coaching them so well.
