chose to sing Barbara Streisand’s “The Way We Were” on this week’s American Idol. I was scared for her with this song choice. The coaches advised her to sing the first part softly and subtley and she did this in an excellent way in the pre-performance reel. Unfortunately, she didn’t do it on the actual performance. She started off too strong and too flat. She could have captured the audience with those first few notes had she done them right, but she has the same problem that Kellie has with connecting with the audience in an intimate way. She can do the big fun stuff and connect just fine, but the more subtle and mature emotional connection isn’t there yet. I have no doubt she’ll develop this over time. Once she got into the mid and higher register, she started belting the song out in pure Paris style. This last half of the song was good. Randy liked it but didn’t love it. Paula said it was the best female performance of the night. Simon said that it sounded like she was trying to impersonate an older performer but that it was a good vocal.
