So we’ve come down to the American Idol Finale. Will it be Taylor Hicks or Katharine McPhee? Just to show that I am not a TOTAL addict to the show, I can confirm that I did not watch the show last night and have heard nothing about it as I watch my DVR now and write this piece. The show started with a nice promo piece for Taylor and Katharine, positioning McPheever and the Kat Pack against the Silver Fox and the Soul Patrol. Who will win out? Most prognosticators say that know the answer, but I’m convinced going into it that it could go either way. . especially based on last week’s incredibly thin voting margins. First up was Katharine McPhee singing a reprise of her “Black Horse and a Cherry Tree.” She chose not to spin around on the floor this time. It was a fun performance but we’ve seen it before so it didn’t inspire as it did the first time. She looked great, as usual. And, she sounded quite nice. No screechy high notes whatsoever. Randy said it wasn’t as impactful as the first time but it looked like she was having fun. He thought she sang it better this time though. Paula said it was a fun way to start the show but she felt there was more and better in songs to come. Simon gave it a good with a small “g” because the occasion was bigger than the song. Next up was Taylor Hicks singing “Living For The City.” Again, a repeat of a previous performance. He started out in the audience and sporting a velour and violet jacket with silver shoes. He sounded good and was as goofy as ever. He kicked up a few hop-skip dance moves with Paula dancing and clapping in the background. He was having a good time. Randy said he was worried that he chose Stevie Wonder but that Taylor always makes it his own. Paula said some weird stuff about how they matched outfits and she got his dance moves down. Simon made a joke about how the audience hated him, and said that it was a smart way to start the shoe, giving Round One to Taylor. I agree: Round One to Taylor Hicks.
