At least, that’s what a lot of fans are saying, including up to 16,000 fans who have signed a peition asking for a recount. See this direct from the Miami Herald on Saturday: `American Idol’ voting mix-up? American Idol sent rocker Chris Daughtry home Wednesday night, but Daughtry’s fans aren’t quite ready to let him go. At least one online petition, with more than 16,000 names attached, is calling for a recount of the American Idol votes. MSNBC.com has received numerous e-mails and bulletin board posts claiming that voters who dialed the first of Daughtry’s two phone numbers were greeted by a recorded message from Idol singer Katharine McPhee, thanking the caller for voting for her. According to Wednesday night’s show, McPhee received the second-lowest number of votes, after Daughtry. Tracey Adams, a family friend of Daughtry’s, said fans from his North Carolina hometown were among those who heard another contestant’s voice when calling for Daughtry. One fan wrote: ‘They had another voting mess-up. When I called to vote for Chris, Katharine says `Thanks for voting for me.’ I thought I dialed the wrong number, so I tried again, to hear Katharine, again. People were trying to vote for Chris — not Katharine! That’s why Chris went home. GRRRR. REDO please!” Other voters claimed that they were able to get through on both of Daughtry’s numbers and heard his voice, not McPhee’s. Still others said that despite calling solidly for two hours, they were never able to get through and place a vote for Daughtry. FOX was not able to immediately respond to a request for comment Friday morning. The news wasn’t all bad for Daughtry this week. Thursday night on Extra he was offered a job with the band Fuel, from bass player Jeff Abercrombie and guitarist Carl Bell. ”Chris, if you are watching, we’ve talked about this before, and if you want to entertain it again, we’ll take it and go,” Abercrombie said. Daughtry performed the band’s song Hemorrhage on a recent Idol show. In other Idol news, with the field filtered down to the final three, Paula Abdul has cast her lot in the competition. ”I am going to be honest with you — I want Elliott [Yamin] to win,” she tells Teen People, crediting herself in part for “making America wake up and see the talent that Elliott possesses.”

The truth is~Chris wanted OUT!! He had to get out BEFORE the finale, in order to join Fuel. Then, he blamed his fans for his early departure. NOT COOL!! You just wait~it WILL all come out!!
I don’t know Cindy. . . It’s an interesting conspriacy theory, and it certainly may be better for him in the long-run to not win AI, but from the interviews that I’ve seen with him, he seemed pretty sincere about his surprise and dismay at getting the boot. I think saying he “blamed his fans” is a bit of a mis-characterization, as well. . .
Hmmm. Have I lost perspective? I’m usually up for a good conspiracy theory. . .
I think at this point in the contest, it wouldnt matter who went home. Fans will be upset. I think Chris fans got comfortable and probably did vote like they should have and the result of it is Chris got sent home. Let’s face he was in the bottom three before, and no one is safe at this point. Whom ever you are going to vote for you need to vote to get them to stay. Don’t leave it up to others. Now, look at Taylor Hicks fans. He has never been in the bottom three or bottom two. His fans are obviously very devoted. So my advice to Daughtry fans is: get over it. Don’t blame AI. Besides he has a great future in front of him. He is an awesome singer and he will have a lot of offers coming at him. So I wouldn’t cry too much over Daughtry leaving. Because Creed or Fuel will be very lucky to have him for a lead singer. No conspiracy here, Just some people getting too cushiony thinking he already won. A good lesson for Taylor, Katherine, and Elliot fans.
I agree totally with Kim. Chris fans just need to wipe their butts, get a clean diaper and move on with their lives. That’s so childesh. I mean, this isn’t the presidential election! Like Kim said, he will get someone to sign him, i mean, he didn’t get this far being a sorry singer. He’s a great singer and a great performer. I personally aint crazy about him, because i’m a die hard Taylor fan. SOUL PATROL! But yeah, chris fans just had it in there heads that he was going to win…hands down. But sorry to say, you have to work at it and vote to keep someone going. Otherwise they get eliminated. Don’t blame the phone lines, don’t blame AI, and don’t blame FOX. Blame yourself for being comfortable and a little too confident.
Thank you…
“SOUL PATROL” WOOO
wiping butt now. .
chris was tgthe best. i am a 64 yr old retired nurse and don’t really like rock but he has the best voice. maybe another voting method should be done. i called but couldn’t get through
I have been reading all your comments and I find it so hard to believe that you are all that naive. Do you really think that any of these shows, American Idol, Survivor etc are legitimate? The producers are the ones who decide who wins, not the public and not the judges. That is just a ploy to get people to call. They make money from every phone call that you make. Watch the show called “The Reality of Reality TV” and it will tell you the truth. Sorry to burst your bubble. These shows are just like soap operas and surely you don’t think the soap operas are real. Do you? I guess I’m still in shock because I thought everyone knew that you don’t REALLY have a say in who wins. Anyway now you know the truth.
Thanks Lois I had always suspected that was the case, I was one of the suckers that wasted 2 hours non stop calling those numbers just to continually have the calls not go through at all, they weren’t in service. I’ll check The Reality of Reality TV out. Thanks for the info.
