Elliott Yamin was given “Open Arms” by Journey to sing by Clive Davis on tonight’s American Idol. In the pre-performance interview, Elliott was sporting a crazy blue hat of some sort. He was looking pretty cool. But Clive didn’t give away any clues as to what’s in store for Elliott next. Elliott came out in a nice light colored suit which is fairly unusual for him. He started off soft and sweet and moved through the first few bars pretty seamlessly before starting to belt it out full force. He sounded great, I have to admit. It was nice, professional, and pretty. It was very similar to the original, which on the one hand was quite an accomplishment in and of itself. . he could easily have been the original artist. But on the other hand, it was not unique. Randy started by saying that the song was near and dear to his heart because he “worked with Journey.” Randy told him that he had some problems with the chorus but he worked it out, adding that Elliott should feel free to take chances and do his thing. . . Paula said he was in “excellent voice” tonight and she cannot wait to hear everyone say that he was the best ever. Of course, we all know now that she is rooting for him specifically to win the competition. Simon said that it was a great choice of song but it was not a great performance. He offered the advise that he needs to loosen up and start believing that he can make the finals next week.
