As predicted, Elliott Yamin was voted off American Idol this week. What an amazing run he had though. Over 50 Million votes were cast, and the margin between all three top contestants was as thin as ever in American Idol history. American Idol Top 3 Voting Margin #1 33.68% #2 33.26% #3 33.06% If this were a serious statistical vote, then there would be a recount and a run off because the differences between these numbers are in no way “statistically signficant.” Basically, it means that there is a tie this year for American Idol. So, each of the contestants should feel great, and no contestant should feel more great than the other. Of course, Elliott was in the bottom spot, but who are #1 and #2? Is Taylor in the top spot with a tiny margin over Katharine, or has Katharine upset the balance with her spectacular performance of “Over The Rainbow?” We can only guess, but the margin shows that America is divided over these three contestants and anything can happen for the finale. As for the rest of the show this evening, they showed a kick ass Ford commercial, “Young At Heart” which profiled the top 3 contestants made up as old geezers having a party and hanging with their Shelby. It was pretty funny. Then they showed each Idol hopefuls returning to their home states. First, it was Taylor hanging out with thousands of fans at the shopping mall in Hoover, Alabama. The Mayor was trying to be COOL and did his own swaying and clapping to Taylor’s grooves. Then, off to the Governor’s mansion. Ugh. How gross to see these politicians prostituting for airtime. May 16, 2006 is now officially Taylor Hicks Day in Alabama. Where is Hoover, Alabama anyway? I’ll have to Google it. Then, Taylor did a nice rendition of The Doobey Brothers’ “Taking It To The Streets.” I didn’t need to see Elliott and Katharine jumping around the stage behind him. That was a little goofy. But Taylor did a great job on this song. He didn’t goof it up that much and he sounded nice. Second, they profiled Katharine McPhee’s return trip to Sherman Oaks, California. She did the morning show there, then the local radio stations, then off to the helipad to go to LA, flying right by the Hollywood sign and her high school, where she dropped in to a gym that was not nearly as packed as Taylor’s mall. Katharine McPhee also got her own Day from the city of Los Angeles. Then she sang to the audience, handed out hugs, and headed off to her parents’ house for a more intimate welcome. If this was any indication of popularity, Taylor is going to win next week. Then, Katharine did a little Aretha with “Think.” She kicked off her high heels and jumped around the audience barefoot. It was no Aretha but it was a great performance. Third, it was Elliott’s turn to go home to Richmond, Virginia. He arrived on the private jet, then off to the local radio station, then to the local supermarket, signed some face-shots, and then downtown to sing some tunes to thousands of fans. He sang is own version of “Home,” playing to the audience like a pro. Then off to the Governor’s Mansion, where Elliott didn’t appear to get his own day. Then, a street parade and off to the coliseum filled with many thousands. His Mom was SO PROUD. Given this turn-out, it’s hard to imagine that he got the boot. Elliott was brought to tears watching the real. Then, Elliott performed “Moody’s Mood For Love.” Again, it was a nice performance. He sounded great, and looked like he was having fun. Next, Clive Davis pimping the American Idol Season 5 CD. . Pre-order yours now! Then, the final blow to Elliott. He exited graciously. His “Bad Day” real was very touching, with lots of shots of Elliott crying and amazed that this has all happened to him. Good luck kiddo!
