Melinda Doolittle is one of the few reasons that I still watch American Idol. Well, her and the fact that I have this blog. . Anyway, she is such a seasoned professional, she makes the other contestants look like dorks. If Phil Stacey could feel anything, but especially a song, the way that Melinda Doolittle feels and shows every single syllable she sings, then he wouldn’t be the next one to leave the show next week. But I digress. . .
Melinda came out singing soft and sultry and sexy. . Then she got a little wild and edgey through the middle and then finished off the song with an insanely great and powerful crescendo. She brings a smile to my face and a warmth to my heart. She will win American Idol this year. If she doesn’t, she will have been robbed, though it won’t matter because she’ll go on to do great things.
The crowd went wild for her. Randy said that he loves the fact that she comes out every week and gives everyone a lesson in singing. . intrepreting the lyrics, singing with the feeling of the lyrics and that she is the example of perfection. Paula said that watching her is like watching a master’s class. . with rhythm, cds, number ones, concert halls, etc. etc. etc. . . Simon said that the first part was cabaret, and after telling the audience to “shut up”, he added that the last half was great, personable and fun. . He went on to lament that they (the judges) are never going to be able to criticize her. . Ryan asked why it was a problem that Simon couldn’t criticize her and he jokingly added that “we like being mean to people occassionally.”

I agree wholeheartedly. Melinda is just a joy to listen to and watch. I downloaded from American Idol’s website her video performance of I Got Rhythm. At the start it’s unusual as she appears to enter into a trance or something (I’m guessing, of course). She begins singing and her facial expressions are so wired into the lyrics and music it’s amazing and contagious. I look forward to her performances each week (and vote strenuously afterwards – yeah, I’m a sucker).
