Kai Kalama finished off the San Francisco auditions of American Idol with a touching intro reel about how he spends all his time taking care of his ailing mother. It was incredibly sweet.
He sang a Platters song called “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes.” He had a very clear and powerful voice. Impressive range and a bit of a soul.
Simon said that he has a very good voice but has the personality of a “ship singer.” Uh oh. Remember the last time he said that. . er, Jennifer Hudson. Oh wait, she was a ship singer! Randy agreed with Simon. Paula said that he had a nice timbre to his voice. Kara agreed about the vocals but she wanted him to be a little more sexy. Simon cut her off and she got annoyed that she couldn’t finish her thought. Then she finished her thought with telling him how he needed to get it up. Oy vei! She meant of course his performance. They all passed him through to Hollywood though.
