PoliBlog - What Is Wrong with the American Electorate?
Ok, I admit it: my wife and I have been sucked into the whole American Idol business–we avoided it for over five years, but managed to get hooked at the end of last season. The show is oddly compelling, and while a good bit of the drama is contrived (how many double and triple negatives and various other grammatical gymnastics can Seacrest conjure in trying to create suspense over who is staying and going?). Still, the show actually has real human drama and the competition element is very interesting, especially since from a particular point in time, it is wholly based on the audience voting. (And while Simon can, indeed, be obnoxious, is almost always correct).
In noting that ‘American Idol’ whittled down to 12 last night, I must say that I have to wonder what in the world the electorate was thinking: Sanjaya gets to stay and Sundance goes home? That makes two weeks in a row that I was shocked that Sanjaya made it. He has potential, but please. And Sundance didn’t live up to potential, but he deserves another week or two.
Thank goodness, Antonella went–but I was quite surprised that the forgettable Haley stayed and Sabrina went–her style doesn’t do it for me, but she was clearly a superior singer by several levels.
All of this may indicate that it is a good thing that young folks don’t vote en masse in US elections…
I will say this: the show would be hard to watch without TiVo, as each episode tends to be jam-packed with fluff and filler–I think we zoomed through the first 10+ minuted of last night’s show and then zipped through various other portions.

These votes this year are so screwed up….
