Last but certainly not least on American Idol on Tuesday was .  Of course, they had to save the kid for last.  You know, leave on an inspired note and all.  He may be he first American Idol contestant.  I can’t remember.  By the time we saw him, we already knew that they were going to vote him through because earlier in the show Ryan had commented that he has a great voice.

Don’t get me wrong.  I’m all about the blind people.  I love blind people.  Some of my best-friends are. . . Er, sorry about that.  Anyway, Scott is clearly a special guy.  He’s pretty cute and he’s incredibly thoughtful.  His story really IS inspiring.  He plays piano, he skis, he graduated from college at 19. . I’d say just he’s just about perfect.

Scott chose to sing “And So It Goes” by Billy Joel.  It was a soft and lovely performance.  He had a nice tone and was almost totally on pitch.

Paula and Kara were smiling throughout, as was Simon.  They all loved him.  Simon said he was a “cool guy” and Paula said that she loved his voice when he goes into the “softer tones.”  Kara said that she thought it “was a courageous thing” for him to come out to sing . . . ” and I thought she was going to shit the bed on that one, but she saved it by adding “without your instrument which probably makes you feel more comfortable,” making piano gestures with her hands.  Not surprisingly, they all sent him through to Hollywood.

Alex probably wins the award for most surprising contestant on American Idol this season.  He’s a geeky braniac who taught himself to sing in the closet only to get very sick from inhaling mold spores.  Simon started off by saying that he had “come out of the closet” and it was a big joke for everyone.  It would have been funnier if this kid had any apparent sexuality, but alas. . he doesn’t.  Before you get all up in my grill over that comment, I don’t mean anything disparaging.  He’s just a geeky kid.

Alex chose to sing a “Baby Come to Me” by James Ingram.  I think everyone was not sure what to expect.  But he was actually pretty damn good.  Randy said that he had a very interesting and strange tone and was totally in pitch.  He and Paula both said that “it worked.”  Simon started protesting that it didn’t work.  Alex, perhaps realizing that it could go either way, said that he could sing “God Save The Queen.”  Paula thought that was funny and was a reference to the earlier coming out comment but it wasn’t clear if Alex was that witty and dead-pan or if it was just a coincidence or if he was just referencing Simon’s over-wheening Britishness.

Everyone sent him through except Simon.

Ok, Cody Sheldon is an interesting guy.  His intro reel showed a stranged guy with strange hair, pretty decent dance moves, an adoring gaggle of somewhat strange women to root for him, and a few clips from his home-made horror films ala “Blair Witch Project.”

He chose to sing “What a Wonderful World” by James Morrison.  Clearly the judges didn’t know what to expect.  He had a little whiny voice but it was clear and clean and he had personality.  Simon was grooving to him.  Kara was smiling whimsically and repsonded that it was “very surprising.”  She said that his voice and his look don’t add up.  They didn’t show it but I’m pretty sure that they all sent him through.

Deanna Brown is going to be an interesting person to watch on American Idol this season.  She shows up on her own to the audition and adopts some folks to be her family and supporters.  She has a totally cool accent and is clearly a hip chick.

Deanna chose to sing “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay” for her audition.  She has soul and sass and she showed that she has a great voice.  She’s also a pretty decent performer.

Randy said that he liked her, as did Kara.  She said that it she has an interesting and memorable voice.  Paula liked her “quiet confidence” in addition to her voice.  Simon said that it was a terrific audition.  He asked her why she hadn’t gotten a break to which Deanna replied that she hadn’t “stepped into the right opportunity.”

They all sent her through, with Kara giving her a “150%” yes.

Brianna Quijada chose to sing “Let’s Hear It For the Boy” for her audition on American Idol.  She wasn’t totally great.

Simon said that it was clear that her personality got her into the audition.  And, she did seem like a nice and fun person. Then she got really nervous and belted out a rendition of “Killing Me Softly.”  Simon trashed her but ultimately said he liked her.  Randy and Kara said no way, but Paula said yes.  Simon flipped her off and said yes. . So she went to Hollywood.  Simon said that she needed to go practice. . She gave hugs to Simon and Paula as well as a gaggle of folks in her entourage.  I guess it was ok that they sent her through but she really doesn’t have a chance.
